I'm wondering how do people plan when they write a short story.

Do you brainstorm and prepare a start, middle and finish, or do you get an idea and just write?

Mostly I start by free-writing about a moment, sometimes a real memory, and at some stage along the way something begins to form and I take it from there. I don't plot or plan. Of course once you have the idea underway, you work on it.

I wander around thinking about it for ages. Then I write the first draft. I used to be able to produce the story I want in a couple of drafts, but these days it takes quite a few re-writes to get something I'm happy with.

Some I think are done, and I end up coming back and reworking them again.

Maybe this explains why purgatory is a recurring theme in my short stories!

I come up with an idea first in my head, think it through and plan the ending. I think without a general ending in mind the story can go all over the place. That's just me though.

I never commit anything to paper (just the name of the story) until I have the whole lot 'written in my head'.
This could take hours, days or even weeks, but its my system and I'm used to it.
When its fully hatched, only then will I put it 'on paper' and forget about it.
After 6 weeks, but no sooner, I visit it again for editing.
Works for me, even though I could have two or more stories wandering about in my head at any one time !

I can't look at a blank page / screen and wonder what to write next.
