would lab tests identify bacteria or agent responsible?

Lab tests might be interesting if you can arrange it. As regards prevention, how do you feel about Dry Cow Tube therapy?

For treatment, I would work similarly to cows, stripping out (oxytocin might be worth trying), tubing and injectable antibiotics.

Could the lime be damaging the teats and causing problems? What type of limes do the dairy boys use?

we had the same problem last year too... 5 ewes... got the elderly tested... mastitis caused by flys hatching on elder at weaning time... we took all the precautions this time round and repeat... last year we sprayed down the place with a power chemical and power washer... this year we used lime... same thing had happened....
