Hi, I'm applying for a medical card/gp visit card (think I qualify for the gp visit card) and I looked up the website of my GP and it has a notice saying they will no longer be accepting new medical card patients due to full lists.

Does this mean if I want a GP visit card I'm going to have to change my GP? I've been with this practice for the last 15 years and was spending 100€ a week at one point there, I need regular checkups due to conditions/medications but I've been putting off going because of the cost. Will I have to stay a private patient?

I'm afraid thats what it looks like. Talk to the receptionist at the practice and see if they can keep your name on file so if a patient moves away or dies you can be registered there. Otherwise does your town have another GP. I think the HSE will help you get a doctor if you are awarded a card.

Thanks for your reply, think I'll go up and chat to them tomorrow, have to go to the doc anyway (another €55) so fingers crossed I can get put on a waiting list. Is there rules against how many medical card patients a practice can have, or is it just up to the GPs themselves? Because they have a notice saying they're still accepting new private patients

There under no obligation to accept medical card holders , they can accept or say no just as easy ,
I'd expect as your already on the books it might not be an issue been your not a new customer,
But as above they could refuse it

I'm pretty sure the GP isn't really limited in the number of medical card patients they can see. The problem lies with how GPs are paid to see medical card holders.

When a practice agrees to accept medical cards the HSE pays the practice a lump sum each year that pays for a secretary and a nurse. The practice then gets a set fee for each medical card patient on their books. I think It's about €70 a year. So if your GP accepts you as a patient and you visit once a year the GP gets €70 for that year. But if you visit once a week the GP still only gets €70 for the year. Given this its no surprise the GP will limit the number of medical card patients they will accept as private patients can be charged €60 a visit.

I don't think you should allow the above paragraph stress you. If you have a serious illness and your GP is aware of it he may accept you anyways even if it doesn't make financial sense for him to do so.
