Are you giving anything up for lent?

Lent starts on Wednesday next, 01/03/17, do you give anything up for lent, like alcohol, cigs, sweets etc etc?
Even if not on religious grounds, just as a start date for something different.
Or is lent just a thing of the past for most?

I gave up giving up things years ago. Now, I do things for Lent, like extra random acts of kindness, visiting people who need company etc.

Am going to try an 'internet free' day on Wednesday. Have been spending too much time online in general, so it'll do no harm to take a break.

The opposite to myself. Every year I binge on stuff at Xmas, alcohol, biscuits and cake and stuff, it takes a while to eat and drink all that comes in to the house at Xmas.
I use lent as a detox, quit or seriously cut back on all unhealthy ****.
I do have a blowout on Paddy's day, then back to the regime unti easter, then another blowout.

I've already given up junk food mostly (hello cheat meal), smoking, cut alcohol down to less than 14 units per week, and started exercising.

So no. I'm a boring cnut now as it is without restricting myself even further!

I did that 20 years ago. I can never understand why when folk eg take on extra work, and extra prayer and mass, stop eating chocolate etc etc etc then fall right back from what they think is good at Easter.

So I cut life back and stayed that way. Has been fine. Nothing more to be done. Easy enough on a small pension!

And i am not allowed extreme fasting for age and health reasons.

If it's something you can maintain permanently then there is no sacrifice to mark Lent. It's not, under any teaching of the church, a matter of doing what you think is good.
You could always give up the whiskey or chocolates for Lent, as you didn't give then up permanently. ;)
