    Hey,

Picking up a new car this week. First time ever buying a new car.

The dealership offers a service plan for 3 years for €500.

Do you think this is worth it or should I just pay as I go.

I'll be on PCP, so i'll have to use the main dealer for services anyway.

    Cheers

    Hi,
Would love to know the conventional wisdom on this - I am in the exact same position as OP - first time buying a new car, on PCP, VW offering 3 services for €299
    Cheers

I'd probably take it if it covers labour and the standard serviceable items (oils, filters, and other bits that may need doing like suspension parts etc). As someone who's owned several VW/Audis you're going to be paying over €200 each time in a main dealer most of the time anyway for even that standard stuff.

But check out what's covered/not included.

It's very easy in theory, ask what the price of the first three services cost, is it more than the price of the service plan? If so you are winning.

A lot of the VAG group ones work out exactly the same.

Some people like to tie it in with their PCP so they have one "car payment" that covers everything.

To be fair to the VW dealer that's exactly what he said - he said any visit will cost minimum €150-200, and the deal covers labour and standard service items.

Service plans can be hidden, let me explain.
I was looking at a CRV, 3years old and I know Honda do 5 years service plans, the dealer had nothing noted about it but I phoned Honda and they gave me all the details of the active 5 year service plan on the car.
I got a major service in January FOC and have another one FOC next January.
Nice way to save a couple of hundred quid with a quick phone call...

Suspension parts etc are obviously not covered.

You're looking at 3 oil changes, filters and maybe brake fluid if you're lucky, doubt it though.

3 years for €500 sounds great, presumably there's a mileage or some other limiting factor too rather than just 3 years?

BMW's service inclusive cap is 5 years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first.

I had it on my car and it was great with BMW. Included all the standard service items like oil filters/brake fluid etc. It was definitely worth it.

My last service outside of the service plan cost nearly €500

Lots of expensive bits scheduled to be changed once you go over the 100,000 km milestone too.
