Antique locks

The doors in our Victorian house are original including the locks. Stripped the paint from them and brought them to a locksmith wondering if they could be patched up. Said I could scrub them up fine but the problem is the spring (essentially a bar) inside. I could reattach the locks as a feature but they won't work correctly. Wondering if anyone ever got such locks working correctly themselves - perhaps the bar _is_ replaceble by the right metalworker?
