Hi, could anyone recommend the best way to do this route.

We will be travelling by car on Friday and returning on Sunday.

I was looking at the route map and it suggested going through Athlone as the quickest route, but I was wondering if the roads might be easier to travel to Dublin and then take the N3?

    Any suggestions?

If you were to look to slightly improve the road then staying on the M7 till portlaoise, then Tullamore, Mullingar and up the N4 to Edgeworthstown, then joining the N55 would be the best compromise.
The road between Portlaoise and Tullamore is either grand or very good, and north of Tullamore to Edgeworthstown is spot on. The N55 isnt the greatest road in Ireland but aside from a couple of km north of Grandard and a couple of km before Ballinagh it's better than many national primary routes.
Going via Dublin means you need to swallow a few vallium to subdue the anger of dealing with middle lane muppets along the N7 from Naas to Dublin not to mention round the M50, its only 100kmh on those sections and if the N3 is busy and youre stuck behind a truck, you'll loose even more time.
Ive done Cavan to Cork a heap of times and going by Dublin is a far less relaxing drive than going by Tullamore.

I think it's a rubbish, frustrating stretch, there's 3 reasonable overtaking opps. That's about it. It's quite narrow no hard shoulder) for most of it too. I always get caught on it anyhow. I agree with the rest of your comments though.
