I have a new model 161 Tucson. great car but i am looking to change. Is there any approach for negotiating with a dealer - looking at a new VW Tiguan. Bit worried i may lose a lot on the value?

    What would you do?

Consider how much cheaper a 161 Hyundai in a VW garage would have to be for a punter vs just going to Hyundai and getting a new one on scrappage/PCP.

Basically you'll lose your hole on it.

Considering that Hyundai are offering substantial discounts, expect that discount to be priced into the trade-in.

Best is to look at trading in with a marque offering similar discounts - why not upgrade to Santa fe?

Santa Fe is mega bucks though
    €52k IIRC.

Start at 36k after their discount.

The 2.2 (?) auto with just about leather seats is the price you mentioned though. Shocking value.

You will lose your shirt on any 1 year old car you try to trade.

Looking at 2/3 of the purchase price max as a trade in. Which on a Tucson must be about 10-12k depreciation in a year

Your best bet is to sell it privately & then buy what you want.

You will have to look at the cheapest 161 Tuscon with same spec and then seriously undercut that price.

If your car is selling for roughly the same price as the same model from a garage then buyers will opt for the garage sale...at least some come-back.

No come-back for buyers buying private so you will need to really make it worth the buyers while buying from you rather than a garage.

You will obviously lose a good few grand but I'd imagine this option will result in you losing the least amount.

I agree its still more desirable to buy from a dealer at this age/ price range but if you price the car right you my get a private sale as a '16 Tucson still has 4 years manufacturer warranty remaining.

I was in a Hyundai garage last week pricing around the Tucson and was at some competitors. I really dunno how they are the best selling car as the Hyundai was the dearest of them all; asking 1000 more on top of the RRP price on the website and absolutely no room for haggling. I even asked about buying the one in showroom and was "told he didn't need to move on price as that colour will sell anyhows"; Also they were the only manufacturer to not follow up with me in the coming days. Not sure if its arrogaunce, complacency or just the dealer but I certainly didn't see any sign of discounting. But I can't understand it as there couldn't be soo many on the road without some discount. The dealer did tell me he changed a recent 161 to a 171 higher trim Tucson for €5000. Your only hope is to get a Hyundai dealer to source you a different model car and take yours as a trade in. BTW I love the new Tucson R line but at a RRP of 40k its Golf GTI territory; Im convinced they discounting the R line as I seen a garage recently with 12 of them lined up to go out to customers!!

They're giving €4K off the Tucson, why would they give even more off?

That's only for scrappage. Nothing off trading a 141 car.

Usually with trade ins you just get a cost to change figure with the discounts used to beef up the trade in price.
The scrappage bonus isn't just margin the dealer has, its just given by the distributor on the 'scrappage' deals.

On the VWs, they used to give a lower PCP rate on higher spec models, not sure if this is the case on the Tiguan.
