What's the quickest or the best way to get to Derry ... driving ..
Up the west coast to Sligo or is there alternatives ??
Hardly Dublin ?? .. and Dublin to Derry ?

If I were doing it I'd do Limerick - Dublin, M1 to Dunleer, N33 to Ardee and N2 to Derry.

Would reconsider the route via Sligo when the M17/M18 opens, but not for now. Road after Gort is very variable.

    google is currently showing 4h35m for limerick-athlone-cavan-omagh-derry, 4h42m for limerick-tuam-sligo-donegal town-derry, and 4h42m for limerick-dublin-(m1) ardee-monaghan-derry.
i know which one i'd choose, based on those times - the latter one. driving the theoretically shortest route is a much more 'cross country' route and thus more tiring for a drive that long.

Would think the direct route a more interesting drive. Have done it once from Limerick.

the OP asked for the 'quickest or best way'; which suggested they're not in it for the scenic route.

    Done this few times

Go by Dublin, might be a bit longer but much more relaxing

Midlands is hard on the car, Galway past Claremorris is torture

Try Google Maps at all? There is no secret or best route. Shortest from Limerick is via Sligo and there will be no M-anything anytime soon to get around the really tiresome bit of the N17 on the Mayo-Sligo stretch. The road is decent after Collooney though.

I'd chose the latter too for the reason that there is more opportunity to shave minutes off that time on the motorway and I think it would be the quickest in reality

Think you missed the bold part, and the 'best way' is subjective and as the OP already mentioned the quickest before the OR it can be assumed he may mean the more scenic route.

For me, personally, the non motor way route is the best way. IF I was in a particular hurry I would go the motorway as I would shave time off the suggested.

Thanks for all the comments, i'm going to go via Dublin..i need the easiest way really , not to arrive in Derry for a meeting exhausted although its tiring enough either way...but from my limited knowledge gort to Galway is cumbersome and i'm sure theres bits of the tuam -mayo-sligo route which must be arduous enough ...thanks again
