Getting sick of looking for a job.

So basically I was let go at Christmas and have been looking for work ever since I have sent a lot of CVS even rang a few places and nothing. Most of my experience is in retail but I don't think I could go back to working 4 hour shifts three days a week so I am looking elsewhere , or even I would go back to retail If I was gauranteed full time hours but working 12 hours a week on minimum wage isn't going to get me anywhere . Is there anyone that might be able to give me a few pointers on what I could be doing wrong ?? I do have limited traffic management experience but I don't think it's enough to land me new job in the same area.
    Any advice appreciated.

Go to University as a mature student and do a degree that actually results in job prospects?

    Start your own business?

edit: What I mean is choose a degree with a defined job at the end rather than art or social sciences

Going back to college isn't an option for me I can't ask my partner to foot all the bills while I study for four years , and I have no ideas for a business.

Fair enough, I wouldn't be able myself either.

If I were you I'd forget about posting CVs, they're likely just going straight into the bin. I'd go in person and ask the manager. Be confident.

Perhaps something like a bookshop that doesn't have mad hours.

You can study part time. Plenty of course available that lead to decent careers.

I should probably have mentioned I have a business management degree , it's done me as much use as toilet paper

Receptionist at a Hotel? You could work up to front office manager.

OP, have you given your CV to anyone else to get a second opinion?
Not to be judgemental at all but you do have a few spelling and grammar mistakes in your original post.

Where did you get the degree and how long ago? What result did you get?

I didn't write my own CV my partner did , she is an English teacher so that helps

plan out a week - mon to fri, list who you are going to target each day in each shopping area. Then tailor the CV's to the business and research key words used by each one and include in your open profile section.

Target each business and turn up suited and booted looking for the manager and present the CV. just advise them you are in a position to apply for a suitable role and open to a conversation should they wish to meet after reading your CV.

While more time consuming i find that approach is best as you are using the language of the retailer not a generic CV approach, most CV's are binned as people looking for roles bang out 500 of the same CV to all types and never build a CV to fit the role or business they are looking to get employed by.

Maybe this is why you cannot find a job. If your attitude shines through your CV and interview then it is hardly surprising. People gave up their time to respond to you and you show no appreciation.

I feel your pain. I was let go just before Christmas as well and naively thought I'd be back in employment in no time. It turns out just after Christmas is a really bad time to look for work. Some HR departments werent back from Christmas holidays until the middle of January(its well for some!), People don't generally move jobs in that time so there were very few openings. Come the first week in February I was really fed up of looking. I got a couple of interviews in that time, but none which felt like quite the right fit.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. I interviewed somewhere, got on great with everyone, did well on the technical test and long story short I start next week, so the main advice I would give is don't get disheartened. Many shops will be taking on staff in the run up to Easter, which is only six weeks away.

Have you tried pounding the pavement as it were, bringing a copy of your CV round to some retail stores and asking if they are looking for anyone? Also, its spring time so garden centres will be getting busy. Have you tried going into the likes of Woodies with your CV?

perhaps bad attitude/bad temper and lack of patience is one of the problems you have with getting work.

    As above.

OP expects everyone else to sort out his life within an hour of posting.

OP can still avail of the privilege of starting a thread in boards prison if he wishes!
Pretty decent "prison" conditions really for his ilk.

Get rid of the bomb first nobody wants to hire a terrorist :). If you can't get the job you want in Ireland try looking abroad, Get a friend or someone to look at your cv there could be things missing or that you could add to to make it better, Best of luck anyway.

Well, I can see why got your partner to write up your CV.

Thing is, you won't be able to fool people when you have to send a work-related email. I wouldn't worry though, that seems like it'll be a long way away for you.

It's clear from this post and another from the OP earlier today that Boards really isn't the place for him, so I've spared him the trouble of having to put up with all the quite obviously useless advice here. Seriously lads, could one of you not have offered him a job? He'd be a great asset I'm sure.
