Hi everyone, complete car novice here. Looking at changing my car (driving 06 corolla) current front runner is to get a 2010 golf not sure if should go 1.6 or 2.0, any one aware of any particular issues with either model?

Or any suggestions for a different car that i should consider? Budget 10k

    What I would like:
Diesel (at least an hour of motorway driving every day)
Nice looking (i know this is subjective)
    Cruise control
    Bluetooth
Decent back seat space (car should comfortably hold 4 adults)

Is the 2.0 a 140bhp version? There were lower output ones, but I'm not sure what was available in 2010. I had a 2011 140 bhp one. Great car. There weren't too many of them on the road though. Absolutely no comparison btw the 1.6 106bhp and the 2.0 140bhp...

There was a detuned 110bhp 2.0 TDi version too that was a stop gap until the 1.6 TDi arrived. If you frequently have 4 adults in the car then the 2.0 litre would have even in detuned form a bit more grunt than the 1.6 litre.

The 1.6 vs the 2.0 is night and day. You also get a 6 speed box with the 2.0 which us nice.

Both engines are partial to EGR valves but particularly the 1.6, so much so that if I was buying a 1.6 i'd like evidence it was done otherwise I'd be factoring the cost of the job into the purchase price for peace of mind sake.

I'd also bare in mind if you are looking at cars older than 2012 that they are due a timing belt every 5 years so make sure this is done already or if you are buying from a dealer try and negotiate it into the deal.

Thanks for the advice. The 2.0 one I am interested in is "GOLF 2.0 TDI GT 140PS 5DR" . How can I tell if the EGR valve needs to be done? Sorry I really know nothing about cars.

This is a motors forum! Of course everyone is going to say the 2 litre. Including me. Fuel difference will be small, and you might get a better spec.

You've not got any real way to check as a punter. If buying privately I'd steer clear of anything with a check light on the dash but that goes without saying really.

The car I'm looking at buying is from a garage but it is not a VW garage. Also do ye think I'd be better off selling my own car privately or trading it in?

Depends on the car and the dealer, what have you got? Post up a link to the car you are looking at.

More than likely it's a UK import as I don't think there was a GT Mk6 Golf sold in Ireland from new. Make sure to do a history/mileage check on the car either way.

This is the car I am most interested in, there's another same model in a garage nearer to me but it has higher mileage. I'm changing from a 2006 corolla

UK import. Thread carefully. Full check as Bazz suggests is imperative.

Worth pointing out the garage is only in business around a year.

Why is it maybe a bad thing that it os a uk import? Also when u said to do a full check is that the online motorcheck?

You'd want to be doing a check on any car you buy, uk or not. Cartell/motorcheck etc.

If you get the uk reg number from the seller you can do a few free checks.

Well is there any reason for me not to consider the 1.6 diesel instead of the 2.0 litre? Aside from power and bearing in mind I am not a car fanatic.

It will be nicer to drive on the motorway. (Power basically!)

    Economy too .
I drove a 161 1.6 seat leon which claimed it was doing 52mpg at 130k on the motorway.
My own A4 2.0 will be doing around the 60mpg at the same speed

Thanks a million for all the advice. I'm going to view one in a garage close to me on Saturday. Will let ye know how I get on. If ye think of anything else i need to look out for/ask between this and then let me know... I'll ask about EGR valves and the timing belt

    Update as promised:

I've bought a 2010 2litre Golf GTI 140ps. Just over 160km and took my car as a trade in (2006 Corolla). Is giving me a 6 month parts and labour warrenty and car will be fully serviced with new timing belt when I collect it next week.
I'm paying €8000 along with my trade in.

All in all I'm happy. Thanks again everyone for the advice.
