PRSI free check up

    Hi All,

I need clarification on this issue. I rang to get my teeth cleaned and was told I needed my yearly checkup. Every year its free as I pay PRSI. So when I was finished the girl quoted me 90 euro (50 for cleaning and 40 for checkup). I explained that it should be free. She said I should have told them a day earlier so they can get the forms sorted but I need to pay the 40 today which I stupidly did. However I never had to do that before, I just filled out a form at the end.

Do you need to give notice or was I robbed today? The girl said that in 6 months I can come back and get a free one but I don't need to go back until next year so a waste of 40 euro

    Thanks

Are you a new patient there? If you have been there before then the reception should have checked the PRSI number they have on file for you in advance to see if you are qualified for a free check up.

If you have not been there before, you should have told them you wanted a check up on PRSI and provided them with your number in advance. Most clinics contact the dept of social welfare the day before by email/fax to confirm eligibility. In my clinic the patient pays, then we contact the dept of welfare the following day and refund the patient if they are indeed qualified. If the patient doesn't pay and we find out later they are not qualified, then it is very difficult to recover the check up fee after the patient has left the clinic.
