Love stories...

Sometimes the people i meet when I am out tell me some beautiful stories... I tend to sit a while eating a picnic lunch and folk stop to chat..

Last week, I saw an old ruined church ( monastic and church historian) and there was a graveyard nearby.

An old man had been in there and when he came out we got talking...

When he was a young man, he fell in love with a local girl. NB He is nearly 90 so times were different.

His parents did not approve so they sent him away to London.

The young ones kept in touch, love being love, and she went to London to be near him, only to fall ill with TB and spend many months in hospital.

Finally they married and came home to Ireland.

It took nine years for his parents to relent and of course by then there were grandchildren.
Two; one died in her 40s..

Three years ago, the wife died.. after over 50 years of marriage

Now she is buried there and he visits her every single day.

I had watched him from afar, standing by her grave, chatting.

Such utter faithfulness.. a true love story.

A bit weird watching him visit the grave.

Did the Ghost of Christmas Future take you there?

I happened to be there, in the parking area, and there were others visiting and cleaning the graves. When he came past, he spoke.

Happens many times; old folk can be lonely and enjoy chatting to the living as well as to those gone before.

My grandfather used to do that too every day. No matter the weather or what was on he went to say hello.

He moved to London and waited for her? That was the longest anticipated dirty weekend ever.

Indeed yes. Always make time to listen to the lonely folk. Such faithfulness. Such caring and such need.

Sometimes I tend the neglected graves; where there is no one left to do that. My own family are too far away for me to do that although I make sure their graves are tended.

    Family matters.
