Coral Shootout

This is a bit of joke tournament. 128 players in a one frame shootout with a ten minute limit on the frame. 15 second time limit on shots for the first 5 minutes reducing to 10 seconds for the last 5 minutes. Unbelievably, this is a ranking event but a lot of the top players have stayed away.

Graeme Dott sums it up by saying that if Jim Davidson makes a comeback, Big Break may become a ranking event.

I like it, can be a bit of fun with some interesting scenarios and shot selections quandaries that you don't get in a 'normal' game.
Bit weird that its now a ranking event though, would be annoyed to miss out on T16 at the Worlds because of money someone gained in this event.

Down to the last 16, played to a finish tonight.
Ken Doherty and Fergal O'Brien still in it.

Dave Gilbert robbed in the quarters after Xiao committed a time foul and the ref missed it. A few of the players on twitter are giving out yards about it and saying that this should not be a ranking tournament.

Obviously shouldn't be a ranking tournament as it's a different format. Apples and oranges.

Can see how it'd be interesting as a side show. But is the standard not a bit crap? 25-18 the champion was defeated for example.

Fair play to the winner Anthony McGill coming out and saying it shouldn't be a ranking event.

Snooker has never benefited from any sort of gimmicks and should always be played as it's meant to be played .

I'm of the same opinion as Shaun Murphy, this, and all events, should be ranking tournaments.

Should Wimbledon be a snooker ranking tournament?

    It's also not snooker.

What? All snooker events on the tour, obviously.

All comparable events on the tour, maybe.

    This isn't comparable.

Lots of sports have short-form versions, but they don't affect the main rankings. 20/20 cricket, rapid/blitz chess, rugby sevens, futsal, etc.

Hard to think of any reason why this should be treated differently.

With snooker, the ranking points are based on money won, so if the 1st place prize for the Shootout is kept small (it's only £32,000, so 32,000 points), then it won't greatly affect the rankings anyways.

Some manner of maths is needed then to take the prize money for non-snooker events out of the calculations
