CE/FAS Work Scheme - Leave for Retained Firefighter position?

    Hi,

I'm currently 1 & a half years into a Community Employment Scheme in which I work for the County Council. Out of curiosity I applied for a part time (Retained) Firefighter position in my locality and was successful in getting the job, I was informed of this today.

However I'm just wondering what the situation will be re: my CE Scheme. It's worth noting that it will be the same County Council that will be paying me or that I will be working for.

So, I'm just wondering would I qualify to cease work with my CE Scheme now as a lot of the time my work involves me working to far away from the fire station and I'd be of no use in the case of an emergency as the rules states I have to work and live within 1.5km of the station. Or do I have to continue on with what time I have left with the scheme ie. finish it out and turn down the Retained Firefighter position?

Never, ever turn down real paying work in favour of an employment scheme!!!

Talk to the CE scheme supervisor, and see if they can transfer you to some work that would be in an appropriate location - and if they would be happy with you downing tools at a moment's notice to attend a fire call.

If they say "no" then talk to the firefighting manager, and see if they can exercise some influence. (eg set up a new CE scheme job in the station house :-) )
