I want to fence out into the river to stop sheep going into neighbors.

I cant fence them away from the river but just want to fence out into river so they cant walk around it.

I have done this for years with barbed wire for cattle but not sheep wire

I think the sheep wire could rot in no time so I was wondering has anyone ever done a job like this or what could i use to fence it off

    TIA

I thought animals were no longer allowed in watecourses, why do you say you can't fence them away from the river.....not much feed value in water
As you say putting a fence in a river wouldn't be great for either stakes or wire.....you'd just have to keep replaced i suppose

Its the shannon so they wont wade into it,

cant fence them away from it due to the cost, its rented land and there is over 2k of waterfront

I suppsoe i could leave that section to its self as in i would only need to replace the 20 foot thats in water

You were going to put up a fence in the River Shannon.

Edit: where does the landlord come into this?

well like only running from field out into river until its 2 foot deep so sheep wont walk around it, landlord is demanding it cos the sheep are grazing his lawn !

    Landlord owns the land.
Landlord should put up the fence.

Graze his lawn. Maybe he'll put up a fence then.:D

You wouldn't rent a house without a front door.

You must be getting the land for nothing!

What's the bank like? Is there much of a difference beteeen the high v low water mark
We've a few borders along rivers but they're more like mountain streams than rivers.
But if I were u I'd contact inland waterways or something to check that you can make changes to the bank

I'm not aware of any specific legislation that would prohibit you extending a fence a short way out into the river to stop livestock.
One problem with sheep wire in this scenario is that it can get choked up with debris and blown out of it in a flood. But I suppose dealing with the Shannon that's always a possibility no matter what you do.

There's a lot of short fences going into rivers and lochs about here, more 3/4 strands of barbed wire but it is used for sheep also.
For the short length that it is you may aswell go for pdm posts and heavy duty wire,if it was me that's what I would put up,and I'm the kind of man that goes for cheap split posts when fencing ;)
