Minimum pot size for for growing tomatoes

I'm going to try growing some Toms in pots this year - place I rent in Dublin wont allow a growbag on the balcony. just wondering what size i could get away with ? - smaller the better but don't want to sacrifice growth by going too small. Anyone successfully pot grown before ?

I've never seen them succeed in anything smaller than a 12 inch pot.
