NUI Galway accomodation advice

Hi, I'm a 26 year old going back to do a Masters. I'm leaving a full time job to do it so I'm going in 2017/2018 on a student loan broke as hell! I've been looking at accomodation, and I think doing a rent share is probably more up my street given I feel abit old for the digs/ student accom!
I'm just wondering is there a group where people can buddy up for the rent?
Newcastle seems like best area, and my budget is in and around the 350€ mark, but I only need to rent from September to May and feel that may go against me? Any advice with renting for postgrads? Or best places? Any advice at all much appreciated! Literally like a headless chicken trying to figure stuff out!

Post here and see. €350 should get you a grand single room not too far from the college. Galway is fairly small so most places are within a 20 minute walk of campus.

Plenty of people only take up 9 month leases for the college year, and you're a mature student so you should be sound to find a place.

There's a serious housing shortage in Galway for students, I know of plenty of people either living on their friends couches for a few months, or paying extortionate prices for their rent.

If I were you I'd sort the house myself, have a look at daft and look into a three or four bed that suits yourself and advertise it on the facebook page. You'll get lots of offers if you still have a room going around July or August, I think I got 42 people contacting me for an expensive room, good bit out of the city last year, and I had requested females only. So if you sort it yourself, chat to anyone who makes an offer and pick and choose your housemates.

I am in the same situation. I'm 27, starting Postgrad in Sept, never lived in Galway before, trying to figure it out. I was planning on starting to look in July as I presume everyone will be looking in August/Sept. I would be interested in buddying up, same price range.

I'll be back in Galway this September for commencing my PhD. My better-half will likely be sharing with me as she'll be doing her Masters also, if you are interesting in sharing with a couple let me know and we'll keep you in mind for when we're looking.

I'm also in this situation. 32 and going to NUIG for MA Writing in September. I've heard the accommodation rush is manic in late August so looking to avoid that if possible. I don't have The Facebook so can't post on that group mentioned. If anyone is interested in partnering up to find a place feel free to DM me. I could stretch to €550 a month.

Hello, I'm a 29 year old female from London moving to Galway to study Medicine (as a 'mature student').
If anyone on this thread is still looking for housemates please message me.
    Ta very much

The Facebook group linked above has much more activity that here would. Have a look at places you deem suitable and pm whoever is advertising.

I see a lot of posts "blah blah looking for a room I'm sound as ****, if you hear of anything let me know"

No one is going to contact you in these cases, you get enough offers on rooms without having to go out of your way to contact people. So make sure to be active and take initiative.

Always worth calling into the Accommodation Office, I returned to NUI for a year in 2010/11 on short notice, they gave me a list and I got something sorted that evening. (That was the Thursday before lessons started). You'll pay enough in fees so don't hesitate to use the services on offer from the college, they'll only be happy to help anyway.

    https://www.nuigalway.ie/student-life/accommodation/

After that, get a copy of the Galway Advertiser and start phoning around and arranging viewings.

Be proactive and have your deposit ready to go because there is no shortage in prospective tenants, and good luck!

I don't think they offer this service anymore. I've called twice and they told me to try daft.ie but that was all the help they gave!

Hi guys, a friend of mine is in a similar situation to you all. He is about to start his HDip in psychology at NUIG and hasn't found accommodation yet. He'd be happy with a house share or to partner up and look for a place, so if anyone is interested, PM me here. :)

    Hi,

I am starting HDip in NUIG in Sept and currently looking for a place. If anyone is still looking send me a PM and maybe we could buddy up or something.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

You need to be organised, vicious and prepared. Excel sheet the hell out of it and you'll get sorted. Deposits are now often put down on the spot, it's not uncommon.
