Problem with shower temperature adjuster.

Hi all, hoping I can get some help here.

The shower I am talking about is not an electric shower. It is a shower which runs off a gas-burning boiler which is downstairs. The shower itself is upstairs.

So, the only thing attached to the wall, apart from the shower head, is a cylindrical piece of metal, with adjustable pieces at both ends. One end is to control the power of the water coming out, while the other end controls the temperature of the water. It's this second part that is the problem.

It used to be the case that you could adjust it and the temperature would also increase or decrease gradually. These days however, adjusting doesn't make any difference at all. It remains lukewarm at best unless you turn it right up to the top, in which case the water comes out as scalding. We end up trying to make the most minute adjustments to find a temperature that is okay.

Does anyone know why this has happened, or if there is anything simple that I can do to fix it?

Most likely the thermostat is stuck with limescale (if soft water area) or otherwise failed. You'll need to disassemble the mixer to see what causes the issue. Hopefully there are isolation valves fitted just before the mixer.
