I'm looking at buying a VW Up! as a second car. I've found one pretty high spec one for sale with ASG Gearbox. I know earlier versions of these both auto and manual had terrible gearbox trouble. Does anyone know if this was rectified in later models? Anything else I should be looking out for specific to these model cars?:pac:

My missus had one for a couple of years .. manual. It was an alright car .. but I always felt the breaks were very very soft on it .. dealer maintained they were perfectly fine. Once you get up to speed or cruising very inefficient on the petrol.

The Maps and More thing was a disaster .. could never get it to work properly and even inputting text in it need you to pull over take it out of the cradle and hold it like a phone.

It was the five door version and I couldn't drive it with a child in the seat behind me .. I'm only five foot six.

It served a purpose at the time but I wouldn't be seeking one out again

Asg is an automated manual gearbox, it's not as bad as what Toyota or the French would do but I still wouldn't bother unless you need an auto.

    Watch out for ex rentals.

Do you have any idea if the early gearbox issues in these were fixed on later models? I can't find much info online except reading about how awful they were

    Awful in what way?

Rattling, grinding, refusing to into some gears. Some (a lot) would grind into 1, 3, 5 and get into 2 + 4 no problem.

Supposedly they are a non-synchronous transmission?

I dunno, I drove a manual one briefly and though it was nice. (An early one IIRC)

Had one from new for almost two years (141 model High Up 75bhp) and had no issues at all with the gearbox or anything else in the car.

    Drove it hard too :)

Keeping a close eye on the expected launch of the GTI version later this year :P

With a DSG Gearbox the GTI Up! is going to be a machine of great amusement
