My mother has a 07 clio petrol.. when she is driving along she loses power and the speed drops away..then queues of cars behind are beeping..when she drops a gear it powers away or if she turns it off and on again...it was also juddering..her mechanic had a look at it and really couldnt identify the problem but changed the ignition coil..the juddering has stopped but she is still having the problem with loss of power...and she has noticed that when its idling at lights she needs to keep the revs up as itseems to be close to cutting out..now the mechanic has suggested changing the exhaust...im not convinced he knows what the problem is and is trying things at my mothers expense...would anyone be able to suggest what may be the problem..i looked on line and a recurring problem thats close to my mothers problem on the websites seems to be piston rings..

Had the same problem with my 07 Clio, when I changed the spark plugs the problem solved then back again so I checked the ignition leads and one of the leads was the problem, I fixed the lead myself. Driving it for 5 months now no power loss since then.

It really could be any number of things, it does sound like a misfire, though whether it's ignition, fuel or mechanical timing it is impossible to say without a degree of testing. Im.not sureally why your mechanic is suggesting replacing the exhaust, unless he believes there is some back pressure building up due to a blockage, in which case I would suggest he puts his money where his mouth is and covers the cost of the job if it doesn't fix your problem. Has he scanned the car for fault codes at all?

Thanks for the advice, my bro in law is an engineer and he doesnt see how the exhaust could be the problem but the mechanic tested car and the only issue comng up with diagnostics is the exhaust...its going in tomorrow so fingers crossed that will sort it

MY 08 clio has similar symptoms although it is a diesel. Did the engineer figure it out after?

Is it going into limp mode? What lights on the dash come up? Does the car rev past 3k rpm?
By exhaust I'd say it's pointing to a lambda sensor issue.

Hi, no lights on the dash and revs just bleed away...she got the exhaust done 4 days ago and she hasn't had a problem since..maybe the mechanic was spot on..
