tractor not starting

A few weeks back tractor started acting up, would start fine then next time you'd turn it off it wouldn't start again, that could be after 5 mins or an hour running.

once i'd connect the jump leads onto it and the car it started straight away.
Battery was 10 years old so put in a new one and was going fine till yesterday same story again.
I've cleaned all the connections from the battery to the starter no corrosion or rust.
Could it be the lugs on the leads? they are on tight but there is no more room left to tighten further.
its a 07 ursus so no electrics and starter was reconditioned last year.
    battery shows its fully charged.
    any ideas?

check connection where the earth lead goes to ground (chassis)

also I've seen corrosion to build up inside the connector where it is clamped on to the lead, ideally should be soldered.

eliminate the obvious things first b4 digging too deep

    not familair with ursus

If it's not the alternator, starter, solenoid, battery then it must be the cables from the battery to the starter. I replaced them and the terminals on a 1992 zetor 8111 about 5 years ago and have not looked back since.

When you say not starting, what exactly happens when you turn the key? Does it turn over at all?

is it turning the starter and not firing or is it just dead. at a guess id be looking at the starter. if you do go changing it, get the high powered one, youll never look back.

Our 30 yr old JCB was a dose to start for years, heating it before hand etc and no hope on a cold winter's day. Replaced the starter and she fires first time. Unbelievable difference.

Hit the bottom part of the starter and it should work

    thanks for the advise all,
it turns over for maybe 2 or 3 goes and then a clicking sound.
I've tried tapping the starter too and that didn't help.
once or twice the last time taking off the lugs and greasing them got it going which is what has me thinking cable/lug issues.

    how much is a starter?

    Solenoid

Get 2 complete new leads with new terminals to start with. If the issue really is with the starter it is most likely with the solenoid these can usually be got separately for small money.

I would check the ground to the chassis tbh.. then the solenoid if that is ok..

Can you get your hands on a electric meter? Check the voltage across the terminals of the battery before you start it and again when its running. The voltages should be around 11.5V when idle and about 13.5V when running. The 13.5V will be from the alternator which will tell you its running ok. No need to disconnect the battery leads to do this.

We had similar issues with our old tractor years ago. An electrician I know got me a heavy welding lead with big lugs on the end. Never had a problem since. The bigger the cable the better. Low voltage so a high current is needed to give the blast of power to start it. Light cables and poor connections at the ends wont conduct enough current.

Paid 220 for one last year. Definitely buy a good one.

Patsy is right about checking battery voltage. However it should be above 12V when not started. With engine running it should be 13.5V or above ideally. Check that electrolyte levels in battery are ok and above cells. Check connection and leads are ok maybe clean all with a wire brush or file.

If voltage is below 13V with engine running I would suspect alternator. If battery is below 12v when engine not started charge battery and check. However I suspect that starter is the issue. I would do as other suggest and replace it with a hi- speed starter. If you are getting a starter reconditioned you have to be sure repairer is using good quality parts and ideally putting in a waterproof solenoid. However if he is doing that it is often as cheap to buy a new starter.

I think Iskra are a good brand

    Slava Ukrainii

just to update, replaced leads, 20 quid, new high speed starter 200quid, all fine for a week and same thing Saturday.
Dropped Alternator into local place and regulator gone on it...parts won't be in till mid week

If battery shows as charged alternator should b fine..
You could have some problem in the fuel line if she is turning and nothing happens..
