Struggling to find work

I'm 21 finished college June of last year and I'm struggling to find work. Im currently in work experience in a salon a few times a week but I've been applying to all kinds of jobs like penneys, supermarket jobs, cleaning jobs but I'm not even getting interviews. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I apply with cover letters and have changed my CV around multiple times to no avail. I apply in person and online but still hear nothing back. I'm getting worried this will be me for the rest of my life and I'll never be able to do things everyone else my age is doing. Any advice would be appreciated.

What course did you do in college?
Are the jobs you are applying for relevant to this?

Beauty therapy. And a few of the places I've applied to are relevant but they're few and far between so I've been applying to anything.

I'd imagine your not getting interviews for the non relevant ones because they know after you have done college that you have no interest in the position long term and as such are not going to waste time training you.
For the relevant jobs are you changing your cv around for each job application to suit the job specifications as advertised?

I do change my CV around but it doesn't seem to make much difference. I just need any job at this stage but as you said I'm not being considered so I'm not sure what to do.

When your changing the cv make sure you use the same wording as used in the specifications.
You say your in a salon a few days a week is there any chance of getting into another salon for the other days just to get more experience and shows a real interest?
If it's cutting hair have you considered trying a barbers shop I see barbers in my area are always looking for people?

No its beauty therapy, not cutting hair. I have thought about that too but it was hard enough finding the place I'm in. But thanks for the advice.

I don't mean to patronize, but is your CV perfect. Grammar, spelling, layout etc. Have you somebody reliable, (and pedantic!) who looks over it every single time before you send it out.

Have you looked at how to make your CV attention grabbing! For the right reasons, of course! You need to have a CV that makes an impression and makes an employer curious to meet you. Do you think you're the only one handing CVs into these places?! Even a missing full stop could be a reason for you to be disregarded in favour of another.

No spelling mistakes and I have had a few people look over it and they said it looks good, smartly written. I have changed it a few times but I'm not sure what else I can do to make it more appealing. I know I'm not the only one applying to jobs but it still feels so disheartening to get nowhere.

Have you taught about staring your own business from home or travelling to people's homes?
If your on social welfare you may be entitled to btwea while you try to build your business.
Other than that get your cv in with a few recruitment agencies and best if luck in the job hunt.

But most people's CVs will be smartly written! So you need to make yours stand out. Have you looked online at sample CVs? Have you spoken to anyone in your college about how to improve your CV? Have you approached any recruitment agencies?

In my opinion,id say it will be tough to find a job straight out of college.I would try my best to stay in the salon as it looks well to have salon expierence on your cv.Most salons are looking for a min 3 year exp within a salon and most would like you to have a client base too.You say you are on work exp,are you offering services to clients and have you any client base at the salon your working at?Could you approach the owner and ask her about a permanent poistion in the salon?.

I've looked at alot of sample CVs to try get some ideas but you're right I need to make it stand out. I have spoken to the college they thought my CV was good and I don't know any recruitment agencies? In my head I was thinking if I don't find a job in a few months I don't see the point in living.

Dont mind me asking, but did you try the Cruise companies. My daughter did that beauty therapy a few years back and aswell as writing to hotels, salons etc she wrote to the shipping companies and got a few job offers.
A decent wage and nice way to travel for a single person with no commitments. Plus you also get to fill your cv with work experience.

There are so many people doing that course that the profession is nearly dead.

Really nee to make your C.V stand out with maybe a portfolio.

    Google!

I don't know if you're being serious or dramatic with this line, but if you are serious then the first place you need to go is your GP.

Also, put ads up in your local shops and supermarkets. Print flyers and put them in people's letter boxes for a 10 mile radius! Mobile beautician who works evenings could be very handy for some people.

Mainly serious, I won't be going to my gp though thanks.
That is a possibilty if I don't find somewhere in a salon.

How about asking some friends if you can do their make-up for free, in exchange for some decent photos of them. A Facebook page doesn't hurt either.
