The three main styles of parenting are Authoritarian, Authoritative and Permissive. This short video gives examples of all three styles.

My question is, which style was used for you as a child? And, which styles do you suspect are most common in Irish parenting, today and in the past?

My own view is that those who are raised in a permissive way are more likely to become socialists and those who are raised in an authoritarian way are more likely to become right wingers. There are other consequences of course, to parenting for the resulting adult.

The authoritative style seems to have the best outcome. This style requires the parent to be loving but assertive with the child, high standards are expected but most importantly, the parent must explain why they are telling the child to do something. The child should be given confidence by asking their opinion and the child needs some level of independence within certain limits.
