    Hi.
I had a tip in my A6 a few days ago.
Some body work damage but the main issue is that I the steering rack & pinion needs to be replaced now.
I'm told it will be a little under €2k for the part from the main Audi dealer.
Anyone know how I could get this done cheaper at all?
This isn't going through insurance so will have to pay all myself.
    Thanks for any assistance.

    What year is it?
Surely a used one can be sourced for a fraction of that.

    Thanks for the reply.its a 131 reg.
Would it generally be easy to get a used one of these?

There would be plenty being dismantled. I'm not sure if the rack on those would have any electronics needing factory coding to your car. If it did, you might be kinda snookered but given the costs involved, I'd be educating myself and also getting on the phone to breakers.

Yes I do believe it would need to be re-coded once installed.
    I assume that's a main dealer jobbie?
Silly question maybe - but could I get a used rack fitted and then bring to main dealer for re-coding?

Just doing a quick google, it would appear that these need svm coding which is via live connection to audi so while good independent garages can do lots of coding in general, this type can only be done at dealer or approved service centre. Also, you would want to check if a used one can be recoded before spending money on one.
Are you sure the rack is damaged? Main dealers are very fond of throwing new stuff into cars?

    Thanks Again for the reply.
It was an independent mechanic who reckons the rack is rip.
No connection with main dealer at all

Try traynors in Armagh for the rack and pinion...any audi dealer will code the part to the car...for a price..although getting a decent second hand part will save you lots.. I installed a new radio/satnav unit and audi wexford coded it for me..took about 30 mins.

    Thanks for that.
I rang Trainors but none in stock at the moment.
Found one for €400 in Athlone.
    Will keep looking around

Beware of ones off a breaker, they say it's perfect and part arrives with drivers track rod end bent like a banana.

Keep an eye on Traynor's website...they tell what they'll be dismantling in the next few days...obviously you'll be looking for an A6 that's been rear-ended... :-)

    Still...€400 is better than €2k

    Resurrecting this thread :-)
Thanks for all the responses so far - I've had the use of another car for the last month so haven't done anything with the A6 in the meantime...
I'm just wondering - if I were to get a rack from Traynors or somewhere like that & get a mechanic to install it - are there people out there who could reprogram/recode it for me or is it only the main Audi dealer that can do this does anyone know?
Also - I'm based in Galway - so any recommendations on a good mechanic to fit the rack in either Galway or Mayo would be appreciated.
