It's a pretty convoluted route to be claiming it's "direct".

It kind of reminds me of the 37 and the 39A both serving Blanchardstown Shopping Centre. The 37 could take 20-30 minutes longer than the 39A as the 37 takes you around dublin 15 and the 39A is more direct to the City. The 37 gives the people of Castleknock/Laurel LOdge a connection to Blanchardstown Shopping Centre.

The same applies in this case, if you are going locally or have 20-30 minutes to spare/waste take the 40 otherwise the 140 is your best option.

    Can anyone deceiver that map?

It's not exactly clear in the absence of arrows?

So the 40 will start at stop 7132 where the 9 starts (and where the 40 starts early in the morning now), go down St. Margaret's Road and McKee Avenue to Finglas Village, go back up Finglas Road to Finglas West and then back down through Finglas South. In the other direction, it will terminate at stop 6348 where the 83 stops.

I can't imagine anyone from the Charlestown SC end wanting to use the 40 to get to the city centre when it's already served by several other routes that aren't this convoluted. This route will take at least 40-45 mins to get to CC.

However, it does provide Finglas Village, West and South with a direct link to Charlestown SC which hasn't existed since the days of the old 40s.

so the sum total of the change to the 40B is that the daytime services from the city leave 5 minutes later...that improves reliability how?

Surely a small change to the 140 route and letting that service McKee Avenue would have helped both routes.
