On Wednesday I went through my previous 3 years of work on Revenue online and applied for PAYE and Personal tax credit.

I've received a substantial amount (5000) back today, but I don't think that's right as I've only made about €19,000 each year and am a student again.

Whom should I contact to rectify this, and if I've accidentally clicked on a credit that I am not entitled to, what will happen?

Whenever I say it to my mates they all have a similar reply :pac:

They don't bother claiming it back, so I've had no one else to ask.

Ring them and get them to double check it's right.

There's always a chance your claims could be picked up for verification, and if the amount wasn't actually due back, you will have to repay it

If you want to send me your P60s for all years and your P21s and I will run the calculations sometime over the weekend.
Feel free to blackout your name and pps number.

Maybe you were paying emergency tax the whole time? If so you would be due a fair bit back

    Have a good weekend...

If youve paid too much they will take it from your tax credits going forward. Don't worry about it.

I've rang them. Reply was that I wsas only supposed to be charged €500 in tax rather than €2,500 from work.

I'm going to invest it , just in case.

Thanks for your help lads have a good weekend.

Highly possible that it's right if you weren't working in the last few months of each financial year, but did work some long hours over the summer.

Definitely could be right; the PAYE tax credit is €1,650 per year and the single personal tax credit is €1,650 per year. At €19k gross per year (assuming no pension contributions or anything) you'd have been paying a bit more than the €3,300 total credits in taxes, so you'd be entitled to the full amount of both credits. Since you only got €5k back instead of €10k, it sounds like you may have had one credit or the other applied to your withholdings for those three years already, but it's definitely not an unusually high amount to be receiving back.
