Planning a non religious service but understand we still have to get marriage doc signed by HSE registrar. How soon in advance can we book this? It's a bit of a pain doing it the day before but HSE being Mon -Fri...

You have to register your intention to marry with the hse and it has to be done no less than 3 months before the wedding. How far ahead you can have an appointment I'm not sure but you could ring and ask.

Is it the notification of marriage to the hse? You have to do it at least 3 months before the date under normal circumstances .

There's no time limit on how early it can be done so I'd book as soon as possible as appointments can be difficult to get :)

If I'm getting the legal thing done with celebrant, what exactly does the intention to marry apt involve? Do I still need my witnesses?

You need to make an appointment. They will send you an email with the docs you need, birth certs, photo is, names and dob of witnesses, pps numbers and €200. They then give you your paperwork and that's signed on the day by you, witnesses and celebrant

You can't do it more than 6 months before the wedding, all docs have to be within 6 months of the day!

We done it 9 months before ours :D

The 6 months thing I think is if you don't get married on the date you gave you must rearrange within 6 months of that date or you have to reapply, I think it's something like that but didn't look it up, but you definitely can register your intent before 6 months to the date.

We did ours in August for an April wedding - so 8 months ahead. The purpose of it is to confirm you are who you say you are really, and set up your marriage cert. The registrar will go through your documentation and ask a few questions (if one of you is non EU this will be more comprehensive due to the visa implications).

Yeah I really can't remember where I saw it, but it was about getting a copy of your birth cert and it needing to be within 6 months of your wedding date..must be for something completely different! haha!
    Sorry OP!
P.s. The online booking yolk is sh*te, tried to book an appointment there and its telling me there's no appointments between now and September.. My friend just did hers there a week or so ago and she said to ring them!

    That's exactly it.

We had our appointment 14 months in advance.

Oh my God McGiggles you had me so worried when I saw your post, even though I knew it wasn't right! Just found this on the citizen's information website, and as others have said:

"If the marriage does not take place within 6 months of the date of marriage given on the MRF, a new MRF will be required if you still intend to marry. You will be required to repeat the notification process."

I knew the 6 months wasn't before as we had our appointment last August for our wedding this July :)

I think you're thinking of the church. All documents have to be within 6months of the day.
