Hive Thermostat in 3 Zones

    Hi All,

Installed a hive thermostat (combi + single) over christmas and all worked well.

Had this niggling problem with the hot water that I finally nailed down this evening.

Switching the hot water on is activating the opening of the valve but it's not switching on the boiler.

Switching on upstairs or downstairs opens their respective valve plus switches on the boiler ok.

Strange thing is I replaced a climote which seemed to do the hot water on its own I think?

So the wiring back from the control units is only the three wires, upstairs, dowstairs and hot water which controls the valves. I'm guessing there is some merge of those wires going to the valves that also triggers the boiler but I could be way off.

    Any advice?

There is a microswitch in each zone valve actuator which switches on the boiler when the valve is fully open, assuming that it has been wired correctly. Most likely the switch is faulty.

Replacement of the actuator is straightforward and does not require draining the system. The grey and orange wires coming from the actuator are connected to the switch, so it can be tested easily if you know what you are doing, just remember it is very likely to be switching mains voltage so take appropriate precautions or get a sparks to check it out if you are unsure.

Nice one. That makes sense all right. Will throw a multimeter on it over the weekend see do I get anything out of it.

Any reason the hot water actuator would be different from the upstairs downstairs ones?

Hot water is a silver aluminium boxed one the zones are white plastic ones.

No reason for it to be different, it was probably replaced at some stage.

If the switch is gone any recommendations and/or places to buy?

Heatmerchants or Chadwicks, or any plumbing wholesaler should have them. You might have to buy a complete valve assembly, not all suppliers sell the actuators separately, but they can be got. What make is the valve?
