Buying new irons

    Hey Guys,

I'm going to buy a new set of irons next week. I'm a high handicapper (21) and play inconsistently, I've played to 17-18 on occasion and won a few competitions over the years but generally play close enough to my handicap. The irons I currently have (Taylor Made R7's) are fine but I feel I could be getting a lot more out of my iron play. I bought these about 9 years ago when they were new out but was only new to golf and bought them off the rack because I liked the look of them. I'm looking to get fitted for a decent set of irons and ideally don't want to spend more than 700-800 along with my own clubs. I'm thinking of going to McGuirks next Friday. Any suggestions either for or against going there?

R7 irons are a great iron even by today's standard you'll have no trouble selling them on adverts.

I was thinking of trading them against the new irons

I would always shop around, so try American Golf as well.

If you are over 50, then graphite shafts may help with swing speed ... but otherwise I would stick to steel. Maybe ask if they have a demo club or two you could borrow for a weekend, but dont go for a 7/8 iron as they are salesmens dreams (most people will hit a few good shots with a 7 iron) ..... a 5 and a PW would be my choice. Feel is vital, if you ground the club and it feels wrong, then the chances are you will always have doubts. Obviously avoid blades and dont be afraid to ask questions when you are shopping ..... it's amazing what you can learn in a few visits to different shops inc local club pro's.

    Best of luck.

I'm only 28 but was thinking of graphite as I have an issue with gripping with my left hand and thought a lighter club might help. I will shop around, thanks for the advice

See halpenny are putting in a fitting studio in the airport driving range, think they will have it up and running in the next week.
Go to some place where you can see the ball flight and you will be fine.

Thanks Mike, I'll give them a call next week. Sounds promising

    Hi guys,

Just to give an update, went to McGuirks in Leopardstown today and was very impressed. I ended up going with a set of Taylor Made RSI 5-sw and a Taylor Made M2 4 rescue.

To be honest the answers are usually the same.
Got fit by mcguirks and bought off the net then went to 4golf and they couldn't improve on the irons 3 years later.

Mine is a little different Mike, got fitted by McGuirks and bought off them, hopefully won't change for 5-6 years again
