Looking to swtch broadband provider

    Have fibre broadband with Sky

    Thinking of switching to another provider but don't want a lot of downtime during switching.

    Has anyone first hand experience (good/bad) of switching between providers? Were you without internet for a prolonged period of time? etc

    Which provider has the best systems in place for switching?

    shouldbe any downtime (15 mins max anyway) if you switch to eir or vodafone. But Virgin operate a different network, so you would need to cancel sky and start with virgin. A UAN transfer will work to eir / vf.

    no virgin where we are - even though everywhere around us has it

    do VF send out their own routers etc?

    do I just start a switching process with VF and they inform Sky? Or do I have to give Sky 30 days notice?

    Call Sky, they might give you a deal. otherwise UAN is a seamless transfer, like moving from ESB to Bord Gais.

    I'm in the same boat ready to leave Sky. I'm looking at Digiweb as possibly my new provider. Anybody got any thoughts on Digiweb?

    Landline will not be affected if you are staying with eir/vf. Not sure about Imagine/Pure but it should be ok, they should be able to port it also.

    Switched to vodafone... they have a VoIP solution for the regular phone so now nothing connected to the phone socket..

    fairly straightforward process

    Only issue that may occur is that if you ever move back to Sky, they can't (currently) transfer non voice lines such as this.

    can they not reliven the landline? The number would still be associated with our account?

    Vodafone surely can't offer a system that results in peoples' landline numbers being obliterated when moving away from them??

    Its not Vodafone.

    Its Skys system not understanding the CRNs that supplant your PH num in the copper network (as your PH number is transferred out to Vodafones from OpenEirs).

    They currently would need you to cancel with VF, cancel the line and then they would reactivate it for you, supplying you with your current no, but you would have a down time of approx 10 working days of no service. But by the time your new contract with VF is up, they may have new solutions/products.

    If they can then surely Sky will catch up eventually. Just started an 18 month contract now anyway so not exactly a pressing concern.

    eir can, not sure about Pure. Yep, in 18 months Sky will probably have new non voice / VoIP products anyway, thus negating any potential issues.

    One other thing, if you have landline minutes on your mobile, they won't recognise your landline as being a landline anymore, so you may be charged for VoIP calls or it may use your 3/4G - not 100% sure but best check with your mobile provider.

    I have switched from Sky to Pure Telecom in the last month and so far I'm pretty happy with the move. I'm getting the same speed with Pure as I had with Sky. The modem that Pure supply is fairly ok and is not locked down like the Sky modem. The switchover took place on a Sunday when Pure Telecom were not working so I had no broadband for the day as I didn't have the user name and password but that was the only hicccup so far.

    It's been my experience, as your home number is over BB now and not copper, your mobile won't recognise it as such, thus not using your minutes but either charging out of package or using 3/4G. Unless your mobile is also with VF, they may offer you a deal/package, but one way or other, best check with your mobile provider.

    While it's true for when you get an 076 "non-geographic" number on a VoIP line I don't believe it's an issue on any of the mobile providers if you retain a geographic (such as 01 Dublin, 021 Cork, etc.) number which is what you get with Vodafone, Digiweb, Magnet, etc.

    Virgin Media operate in the exact same way - broadband delivered through the cablemodem.
