Guys I'm in need of a bit of advice. Currently after getting the herd number transferred to my name and leased the family farm off my parents so I can apply for the green cert.
To apply direct to the colleges on the application form it says have you done the level 5 agriculture course. Is that necessary in order to apply for the green cert?
    Cheers

Yes it is a requirement for the Green Cert course. You have to provide the transcripts as evidence.

    Hello!
I'm also interested in doing the Green Cert but think I face a big obstacle. My Dad retired years ago and the whole farm is rented. The Green Cert page online mentions that I could use a nominated farm for the practical side of things but I'm not sure what that means. Has anyone else faced this problem?
Also I'd be doing it in West Cork, does anyone know if there is a long waiting list to do the Green Cert in this and when the course starts - like does is start in September like other courses?

You need access to a farm for the practical and "business" side of things. There's elements of both to the course.

The waiting lists are apparently not as long as they were all over the country, since the construction sector got a bit busier. Less people wanting to do the green cert course, as a result.

Not sure about West Cork but the course in Kildalton (Kilkenny) is starting again next March.

Best thing to do would be to ring the general enquiries number on the Teagasc website and have a chat with them.

    Best of luck with it

You should ring the Education Officer in Macroom or Skibbereen they do the part time courses or if you are doing the full time course that is on in Clonakilty.

    Hi Magz,

I commenced the green cert in June of this year.
I'm in a similar position as yourself with most of the farm rented.
What we have ourselves would make a very repetitive diary. You need the nominated farm for the diary only.
You need to record a 12 month farm diary.
My sister and I are both doing it together but need different farms for the diary, so we are trying to source two!! :(
A nominated farm is simply you picking a farm. Like a neighbour, an uncle, a friend or the person renting your farm. And you can do the diary on this farm you just record what you do each week!!!
You also need a set of accounts apparently to complete the diary (although proof of the accounts is not required). It might be hard to get these from a farmer unless you know them very well. But I feel they could be made up, as I wouldn't like asking anybody for their set of accounts! And you need to set the farm up on ICBF to show sales/ purchases etc but this is done through the college! Most farmers already have this set up themselves though.

I should mention it is the distance learning one I'm doing!
Any questions let me know! I remember the fear of the unknown, before I began the course!!:)
