PoE Injector Issue

    Hi folks,

I don't have much knowledge on this issue so bare with me..

I'm installing a ReoLink RL-423 PTZ camera. It's PoE compatible but I'm having issues getting it to power up over PoE.

The PoE Injector I'm using is very basic so perhaps this is the issue. It uses the existing power supply of the camera to send the power up the Cat6 cable.

It's a little plastic unit with 2 x RJ45 jacks and a cable with a connector to plug in the power supply. One of the RJ45 ports says data and the other says data and power. It says Solwise PoE on the top..

Anyway, should this device not send the correct voltage up the Ethernet cable just like a more expensive PoE injector would?

The power supply outputs 12v DC and 2000mA. If I plug this directly into the camera it boots up fine so it must not get the sufficient power using this Injector.

Perhaps the Cat6 wiring has to be different for PoE?

    Thanks in advance,
    Mac

This one? Its a passive POE which isn't really a standard outside of low end networking gear.

Your camera is 802.3at so you need that at a minimum.

This would be a working adapter.

    Thanks for that!

It's even more basic than that, I'll try and post a photo..

I've already ordered a TrendNet PoE Injector with that 802.3at but it just hadn't arrived in time.

I was hoping this would work but obviously not..

Is the wiring for Cat5/Cat6 the same when using PoE?

There is a slight chance of damaging a true POE device by using a passive POE adapter like the one in the photos if you fed whatever power source directly into the RJ45 connector on the devices which needs a true POE adapter. Typically, those adapters are used in pairs which basically cut 2 unused pairs (at 100Mbps speeds) in the cable - this diagram explains it a bit better.

Wiring for CAT5e/CAT6 doesn't change with PoE, should remain standard

Thanks! The TrendNet PoE Injector is arriving tomorrow so I'll know better then.

Thanks for all the replies folks, appreciated..

    Just an update!

The TrendNet PoE Injector worked a treat..

Camera is decent but not without flaws, autofocus being one of the bigger ones!!

    Anyway, thanks for the help..
