Question regarding Shinsekai Yori (From The New World)

Hi, I've been looking at various threads on the internet after finishing From the New World because of a hanging thread that never seems to be resolved or even discussed. However, at the resolution of the series, no mention is made of this potential time bomb? Did the plan fail, or how were the humans able to prevent this?

Hi, I've been looking at various threads on the internet after finishing From the New World because of a hanging thread that never seems to be resolved or even discussed.
It's revealed at the end of Episode 21 that the Robber Fly monster rats went to a hospital and stole children while everyone was being attacked at the Summer Festival. It was said that even if their attack was not successful, in 9 or 10 years they could come back with a unit of fiends and possibly conquer Japan and perhaps the entire world.

However, at the resolution of the series, no mention is made of this potential time bomb? Did the plan fail, or how were the humans able to prevent this?
