Solution for electric guitar practice

I am buying an electric guitar tomorrow. Rather than buying a little practice amp id like to get something to use with headphones. Id like to be able to get different amp sounds and be able to play over a backtrack. I was thinking of getting a Pod of some kind but maybe a usb audio interface is a better solution? I dont have any specific budget in mind but id like to spend as little as possible to get something that will sound good, without background noise or latency. I am using a Mac laptop. Any suggestions would be great.
