Im only getting around to it now. Better late than never I suppose.

I went to PAYE anytime for the year 2013 and claimed health expenses tax credit for 2013.

Had to enter my bank details.

How should I expect to get this back?

As cash direct to my bank account
    OR
another way (as a tax credit or something)

    Direct into your bank account.

I submitted med2 expenses on PAYE anytime for OH on the 2nd Feb, 20% refund was paid into her bank account yesterday.

You get a tax credit for 20% of what you entered. Assuming you paid more tax than the credit, yes, you'll get it all.

Remmeber to keep your receipts and records.

Thanks all, Whilst browsing the revnue website I seen this.

Relief will be allowed at the standard rate of tax (20%) with the exception of nursing home expenditure which is allowable at the higher tax rate, if applicable.

I had an aunt who had no children or family. She passed away a couple of months ago.
She was in a home for about 10 years and its scandalous the amount of money she handed over to them.

Is there any way to claim back some of this money?

Assuming she paid the bills, she (her estate) can claim against tax she has paid.

Assuming she hasn't already claimed and that she paid tax.

As you didn't pay you can't claim.

I got paid the money today. Happy days.

I wonder do many people chance their arm and claim this ?

And I also wonder, will the revenue ever come back and check what I entered i.e. Does anyone know the rough percentage of people that get checked ?

I'm sure that there are people that "chance this", but there is every chance that Revenue will check out claims. Something like 10% of all claims are held, pending verification. And even then, Revenue can request supporting documents at another time.

It's stated that you must retain all receipts pertaining to the claim for at least 6 years

There's a new (at least new to me) MyReceipts section you can upload scans/pics of receipts to, handy

Ya, it's pretty new. You can also use your phone to take photos of the receipts as well.

i put in a claim for health expenses last tuesday (14th) and heard nothing back - normally (well i've only claimed the last couple of years), the money was in my account within a couple of days.

Heard nothing back up to today so rang them because when i went into my account online and checked 2016, it said that i could not access it and had to ring the 1890 number.

The girl i spoke to told me that they put a hold on my claim and couldn't tell me any reason for it just that she'd need to contact my local office and that would take 10 working days!

What would be the issue here?
If it hadn't contacted them, would they have contacted me eventually??

Yes. A percentage of claims get manually verified. This could be anything from a quick check of the figures to proofs required.

You've been selected for random verification. They may request you to provide receipts or copies of your calculation or something along those lines. Either that or they may verify it in house (for example by checking that someone was on sick leave for a period when there is €10,000 worth of medical expenses). Either way they will be in touch eventually. Don't expect anything to be resolved for a few months. It may be resolved sooner than that but I wouldn't rely on it.

    Thanks :)

I had an operation last year so the claim was for around 3.5k - quick enough to take tax off you but not so quick with the refunds, eh?!

I got audited in 2013 for 4 years worth of claims and it was quite an ordeal.
It was also very suspiciously instigated against me as I had rang Revenue a few days after submitting the claim to inquire about a separate matter entirely.
I was given a number to ring in relation to the audit and the person who answered it was the same person I spoke with previously.
Anyway I ended up getting every receipt for the previous 4 years, recalculating the claims and getting even more money back as there were some receipts I hadn't claimed.

Back in the old days I would have advised you to photocopy that receipt and clip it to your med 1 when submitting it as it's definitely going to be checked and that would save the hassle of several months delay (which is used to be in the paper days).

There's now I believe no way of doing that.

I'd a small medical claim of less than €150 and I see that they have added this to my tax credits, instead of refunding me.

how long are revenue likely to take to process a claim after being "randomly selected" for further verification?
i posted all the documents last Thursday to them and have mailed them through online enquiries the last couple of days to ask had they received everything - they are not replying to me.
not used to having to wait this long for the rebate, it's usually all sorted when i do it online really quick!

It depends on the officer dealing with the verification check. In reality, you've only sent the documents a week ago.

MyEnquiries is swamped with queries. These queries get mixed in with general items, claims etc that come in, all of which are dealt with in date order. it might be weeks before you get a reply, and your verification check may have already been done by the time you do

Aarrgghh I'm just annoyed as it normally takes 3 days when not randomly selected....making me feel like a fraud!! It kills me paying out a fortune every month on prescription drugs so could do with getting back what I'm entitled to sooner rather than later!!
