Considering one as a very cheap commuter? Mad or what?

It's a Mitsubishi iMiEV just rebadged. I like the look of the Peugeot and Citroen variants a bit more than the original.

Depends on the price you get one for. They are a Gen 1 EV so the range isn't as good as something like a Leaf, Motor is far from the most powerful and the battery is much more prone to reduced capacity with age than the new EVs.

They are a handy little car, definitely very suitable as a shopping/urban commuting car. You'll save a bundle on running costs anyway.
Haven't heard of any reliability issues with them.

Thanks cros13. Got a lot of that from the internet, though the speakev owners don't seem to report much degradation and give a 60 odd mile range in the winter. About the same as a gen 1 leaf. Just a smaller package. Figured if I could pick one up around the 5k mark it would pay for itself in about 2 years over driving the diesel van to work everyday.

Was planning on replacing the second leaf (which I sold recently) with another one in the next few weeks as filling the van with diesel every other week is starting to depress me. I'll post back if i go for it.

I have driven one and it actually drives like any other electric car.
The length and boot capacity is fine other than their is no parcel shelf to hide your shopping.
The only really noticeable difference is the width of the car. It's very similar in size to the old Daewoo Matiz.
As far as I am aware there is very little battery loss in them.
Just noticed electricautos.ie have an iMiev due in next week.
There are more regenerative battery settings on the iMiev than the clones.
    Compare the gear selectors.

    thanks ei9go

i read about the gear selector issue alright - and there is a fairly simple hack if you want to access them.

It looks like it would make a good car for my commute, but the cheapest i have seen is 4.6 k sterling for a 12, when i can get a 132 gen 1.5 leaf for around 8k i think that would be the better plan.

If you can get a Gen 1.5 Leaf for that money ?

The Leaf is a far better car.

that's 8K sterling mad lad, and doesn't include collection costs. But still, i think i'm leaning more towards the leaf. Just liked the idea of the pricepoint of the ion, 100% payback in two years vs commuting in my van.

I really like the leaf, and my wife is not showing any signs that i will be let anywhere near her one! Time to get a second one again.

You'll definitely appreciate the leaf if spending a lot of time on the road.
