Help with repairing ancient email

My dad has had an @iol email since before I was born, and up until 3 years ago it worked grand. Since it was one of his primary emails there are a lot of accounts are associated to it. I've been trying to fix the proper POP3 and SMTP server for the email to be set to, since it used to be gpo.iol.ie but now there gone.

I was wondering if I had to use a BT server since they're the ones servicing the iol accounts now or do I use virgin media settings for my email considering We're signed up to Virgin media as our ISP.

Another problem is that when I asked people who sent me emails that didnt go through they said that the email failed to send due to my "quota being exceeded" even though I routinely delete emails off of the outlook. The IOL site being virtually dead doesn't help due to it not loading any emails that might be backlogging newer ones.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Technically this is more suited to C&T not BB but no bother.

    Inbound Server: IOL(BT)
Outbound Server: Your ISP (Currently Virgin, you change if/when you move)

The quota issue is due to the small storage allocation of old email infrastructure. Its likely a 5MB or 10MB cap which was huge in 1995 but minute now.

You need to configure the client to receive the email and then instruct the server to instantly delete it. This keeps the server side storage at 0MB and thus not locking up. In outlook see below:
    account-settings-pop3-remove-from-server.png
Unchecking leave a copy clears the messages directly.

Note that if your aul fella is the kind to leave his PC off for a few days at a time his inbox may still overflow.

Be aware, theres an increasing chance every day that IOL will disappear. If that happens itll be a mess. Migrate out to a more commercially sound provider.

I also use iol & virgin broadband and the settings are
    Incoming Mail : pop.iol.ie
    Outgoing :smtp.upcmail.ie

I have the same issues regarding storage and larger emails not getting through, I recently set up a gmail account and tend to steer stuff in that direction now

I have an iol.ie email account I have had for ever. It works fine with no issues (mostly).

However, the iol.ie server has fallen over on occasion or I have lost/forgotten passwords and have had to call BT which was fine and solved the problem.

However, I have a strange problem. I use outlook (version 2007) which largely works fine with one persistent fault - I cannot send emails to gmail.com accounts.

Any ideas why that would be?

I have no intention of upgrading the outlook version (unless I get the upgrade for free).

Have you the outgoing mail setting in Outlook 2007 set to smtp.gmail.com or is it set to your providers outgoing setting?

Set it to smtp.gmail.com if it's set to anything else and try then.

Found the problem thanks to the above posts - I changed the outgoing server to 'mail.vodafone.ie' and that has fixed it. Thanks for that.
