90 secs is the most they say to hang a calf after calving.

I could agree with that, only doing harm after that

The IFA lad is some spoofer, usual drivel from them, no surprises there.
    He'd make a great politician.

Went over to Carrigallen, very good demonstration on calving again.
Lots more waffle and meaningless cliches from Angus Woods of the IFA, apparently the staff in the IFA office in Brussels work 365 days a year, i never knew that.
That Chris Daly lad from ICBF really needs to go and look at some real cattle made of flesh and bones instead of looking at figures on a computer screen all the time. He tied himself up in knots several times answering questions. At one stage he said that a cow which had 7 calves and an average calving interval of 374 days had poor fertility.
    Anyone else go?

As you'd expect , it's very political in Brussels, Ireland would get very little on their own so they have to get support from other countries. IFAs previous rep Micheal Treacy was very well regarded out there and knew everyone and worked closely with all the politicians, Phil Hogan didn't leave him idle long, he's his adviser now. The Brussels Office would put in long hours alright

Angus Woods of the IFA, a Teagasc lad did a bit of waffling about the Genomics scheme, Chris Daly from ICBF was there, Adam Woods and a couple of Farmers Journal lads were there.
Finbarr Kiernan and Mary Louise Ryan did a good calving demonstration.
Arthur Bredin from PG and John Lynch from Dovea talked about cows, calves and a couple of heifers off Bulls from their companies in the ring.

Have heard from lots before that Finbarr is very good
Arthur is good too, but nice to see some of the other AI involved

That John Lynch from Dovea is a fierce helpful guy at the Limousin society sales. Often leads the bulls around for different people.

That happens a lot to the icbf kids. There is a reason why they don't go to open meetings when invited as there is a risk they will get asked real life questions that their computer does not have the answer. Is 374 lower than national average for beef and dairy

They were nothing special overall i thought, there was a couple of SHxLim cows with young ZAG calves. Dovea had cows with EBY, CWI and KJB calves.
There was a bit of debate about what a suckler cow for wet land that has to spend six months on slats should look like and whether heifers should be first calved at 24 or 36 months, does calving at 24 months stunt them etc...

What was view of calving at 24 months. I did it with 3 of mine this year and I think it will be my last time as they look small..30 months in my view is better time

Yeah, 30 months is probably ideal but if a farmer has a compact calving spring herd and wants to keep it that way then it's either 24 months or have them calving at maybe 34 months.
The Icbf view is that heifers calving at 24-26 months old will end up the same size and weight by 5 years old as heifers which calve for the first time at 24-36 months old.

I'd have agree 30mnts is the best age.

A couple of interesting things the vet in Carrigallen said was that almost 60% of calvings vets in his practice were called out to last year involved heifers calving.
Also he said that the CH x Lim combination in calves gives rise to more calving difficulties than any other.

I calve some in autumn and some in spring then I pull back the spring ones a month at a time.. I have been lucky with fertility
Have they proven the 5 year old as looking at my little girls I doubt they will. They are milking away and their calves are thriving so not too worried and we don't need big heavy cows anyway .. but I would still like to see facts.
One reason I did the early calf was to check any impact on stars..wrong reason but if I met an icbf lad I could speak facts rather than pc

That's the thing about ICBF, there's no real feedback to farmers about what they've learned so far. No feedback on the genomics, calving problems versus age, best cross breeding etc etc.
