Student accommodation vs digs in Galway

The applications for gort na coiribe open tomorrow and a good few of my friends plan on staying there. I've been looking at the rates though and even though I'd love to stay there with them, it's sort of out of my means. I've seen that a single room clocks in at 5000 or so for the year or about 125 per week.

I've rang around for digs though and found a few good spots in Newcastle for about 80 per week.

I'm just wondering if I'll miss out socially by not being in Gort. Some people have told me that where you live doesn't really matter, because all you're doing there is eating and sleeping. Others have told me that digs are a waste of time and that I'll find myself isolated.

I've read on here that gort is fairly relaxed with visitors so I could probably visit. But are digs really the nightmare some are making them out to be? Are you under curfew or anything? Can you have people over(night)

Any and all advice appreciated. Bookings open tomorrow so I'd like to find out about this fairly soon

I did digs in first year and found it to be great. It depends on the house you're in and I'd recommend visiting it / meeting them before committing. They aren't the worst. I know people in final year who have been in digs since first year. The rules depend house on house, though mine didn't care when I got home.

Thanks. The lads told me today that they didn't even get into gort. It had booked out so fast they weren't even at the races for a place. Digs is starting to look more appealing to them now...
