Irish Rail say you cannot reserve seats on the Tralee to Mallow line so standing passengers cannot receive refunds according to the article below. This is odd as I regularly reserve a seat online on that shuttle service and it allows you to select seats. Clever tactic to avoid compensating passengers!!

15.17 is booked for 2600s and not possible to pre-book a seat.

Seat reservations only possible on 22000 class ICR's on that route.

Which don't operate the service on a Sunday when the incident happened.

It must be a slow news day down in kerry, if people having to stand on a shortened train makes the news. They would have a complete breakdown if they traveled on the maynooth or drogheda lines where some may have never got the luxury of a seat in all the time they have commuted to work.

What on earth is a horrible commuter railcar doing on an inter-city route? It's like the days when a Park Royal and a Dutch van would comprise the branch connection at Ballybrophy or Limerick Junction. At least in times past the local connection at Mallow would have been Cravens - warm and with tables.

they're lucky to have got half a train rather than a replacement bus.

It doesn't say where the pic was taken but I doubt there were any standing by the time it reached Tralee

Its funny tho in a sense. The normal train broke down and because the regular commuter set was the only one availavble you'd think theyd rather have no train than having the inconvenience of standing.

rubbish. they pay high enough fares and are entitled to something of value in return. not a rattely bit of junk that can't accommodate seating the passengers for the length of journey involved. it's this type of "they are lucky/should be greatful for mediocrity" nonsense that turns people away from the railway

really it's irrelevant. they paid a premium for something and didn't get it. the tralee service is an intercity/regional service, not a suburban service. it's IE'S job to insure suitable stock for the service is availible. but then again we have the old british early privatization model now so inflexibility, lack of stock and low quality are the order of the day (mind you low quality always existed here)

ticking a box on a form does not make you of a religion.

it broke down, they did the best they could.
There's a couple of dozen standing there, that number could have got off by Millstreet....

IE allow seat reservations on 2800 class on this route when it operates on weekends....
15.17 is booked for 2800s and not possible to pre-book a seat.

I believe it's 4 car 22 restored to operate, just typical spokesperson not gathering the facts right before going on the radio and reservations were open for the service yesterday, clearly the fault combined with lot of free travel and Rail Tours mean there is no refunds due as the majority of passengers had no reservations.

Was on the 5.10 Tralee to Cork myself and it was the same story but no mention of it. It was in Killarney where a good few had to stand till Mallow. It's hard to blame IR to be fair due to the mechanical fault and the driver apologized to those standing. However, there was one lady who seemed to think her luggage deserved an extra seat instead of the 'standard class' overhead rack until she was told off.

IE don't allow seat reservations on anything that isn't rostered for a 22000, Mk IV or the Enterprise.

15.17 is a commuter service and seat reservations are blocked for this service. 22000s do work it from time to time but it's a commuter service officially.

Online have reservations open for 22's on the 15.17 Mon-Sat. Look at 2600 on Sundays online and 2600 allow reservations be made online and while no seat specific those who book are more less entitled to a seat.
