Answer the poll. Name the Game in your post and describe your playing experience on an 8 bit or early console like the Atari 2600.
So, for example HALO has been converted to the Atari 2600. A version Sonic the hedgehog has been available for a while on the ZX Spectrum

System you played the converted game on 2 votes

Sorry, don't really understand the question, could you give an example of what you mean?

Are you talking about ports ?
You should keep your list to one type of machines, either consoles, or home computers, and keep it of a similar era, as in 8 , 16 or 32 bits machines ; otherwise it's too anachronistic to be of any comparative value.

Played a take on Super Meat boy on the Spectrum called Dead Flesh Boy, good fun and similar difficulty level, maybe Speccy version a touch easier (unusually). Good fun though, and there are extra levels available if you buy the tape version from the bizarrely named Bumfungaming (yep, he thought that was a good name for his software house) Incidentally he has a lot of excellent tapes for sale but once you factor in the price of postage they are quite expensive, too pricey imo.

    Bum Fun Gaming

He's also released a tape version of the Castlevania Spectrum game, Spectral Interlude (widely available free as download) which is excellent and plays quite a lot like Castlevania on other systems.

Someone's also done an Angry Birds named game (Angry Birds Opposition) which bares little/no resemblance to the originals apart from some the look of pigs/birds.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

So, this is a kind of homebrew/hack kind of thread, rather than the play experience of Destiny on a 360?

I posted what I thought was meant. There's every chance I got the wrong end of the stick. It happens quite a lot!

I played Sonic The Hedgehog 1 on the Sega Masrer System which was designed for the higher spec Sega Mega Drive, and a beautiful port it is too.

Actually the master system had quite a few games that were oroginally designed for the mega drive like Alien Storm, streets of rage etc..

There was a remarkable series of Sonic titles on the Master System and Game Gear alright.
And the developers didn't slack off just because it wasn't the flagship home console either.
From platformers to puzzle titles to racing games, it's a strange thing that they never made a Sonic Drift title for the MD given how good the 8 bit version was and how big Mario Kart had become.

there's a semi descent port of Vampire killer on the NES ... :p

Cannabalt on the c64 a few years back springs to mind

I love this though Space Harrier on the atari 800xl computer

It's a pity the Atari 8 bits never got the UK market the way the c64 did , as when you rush it to its limits it can do some fantastic stuff

    Space Harrier looks incredible!
Must see if Atari Age still have it in stock, and for how much

I love the master system/game gear Sonics... even Sonic 2 and its stupid hang glider. Well I love all of them except the one that tried to go all Donkey Kong Country and looked like someone vomited on the screen.

They aren't ports though, they are their own games and played to the strengths of the host platform. They were made by Ancient which is was the music is so good, Yuzo Koshiro's ma owns the company and he works for them as a coder and music composer.

I love me some NES Vania, but that NES port of Metal Gear is hot garbage compared to the awesome MSX game. I mean.... it doesn't even end in a fight with Metal Gear!

Took me so damn long to get past the damn hang glider bits! Lucky the rest of the game was so good!

I must be the only one that feels that Sonic 2 and Sonic Chaos were a huge decline in quality from Sonic 1 on the Master System! :p

Both graphically and musically, Yuzo only did the Sonic 1 soundtrack btw.

If you go back and compare them you'll notice just how polished Sonic 1 was.

Here's a few C64 ports of Arcade Games which were top notch imo:

    Midnight Resistance:

The soundtrack makes my spine tingle more than the arcade or mega drive version, what a port!

    Sly Spy Secret Agent

    Robocop
Okay the game had bugs that you had to exploit to finish it, but a bug fixed version is available! The colour palette file they're using in this longplay here looks wrong though.

    Turbo Outrun
One of the nicest looking, if not the nicest looking c64 racer out there, it featured upgrades for the car also.

    Power Drift
Decent port with inclines in the game. Same composer for Double Dragon 2 which leads me to....

    Double Dragon II
Not sure how this stacks up against other systems but I loved it as a kid, and boy was it challenging:

    Continental Circus
Doesn't hold a candle graphically to the might Arcade Version, but was fun to play, had weather effects and pit in like its bigger brother.

You can tell that I'm fond of Action and Racing games so here's a great port of a platformer... :p

    Wonderboy
Since you had to push forward on the joystick to jump, my poor father went through about 5 joysticks to complete this game. He said he'd never play games again and never did!
The c64 was extremely good but much harder than the arcade or master system version, the flow of the game is amazing.

    Rampage

Those are just the fond memories I had growing up, here's 2 videos full of arcade ports for the C64, there was quite a lot of good ones to be fair:

And finally, probably the best example to date of a C64 port of a game designed for a more powerful system:

Prince Of Persia by MR SID released in 2011.

I honestly think that if it was ported back in the day it wouldn't look half as good, understandbly a lot more info is available on pushing the c64 to its limits these days, but it's still a fantastic accomplishment.

    ^^ Thats a great post.

Will be looking at all those tomorrow in work.
Midnight Resitance was brill, had to use a book to press all the c64 buttons at once to get infinite lives.

Also my vote goes to Doom. Nuff said

There was talk of remaking monkey island 3 in 2d. Would be awesome!

Haven't played it yet, but apparently notch managed to demake VVVVVV into a 4kb game, VVVV

Also I bought many Gameloft games on my old Nokia & Sony phones... :o

I own a couple of ports, canabalt on the 64 is very impressive, Mario on the 2600 is well done but not overly great to play, the mechanics just don't seem to work I think.
Sonic on the 2600 is freaking amazing, but is a whole new sonic game, so not directly a port.

But boulder dash 2600, wowzers, probably the greatest game for the 2600 ever, 10 odd years to finish, to get it just right, and by God it is! Only 250 copies made, the rom will never be released say first star software....

    And I own a copy :)

I must see if that crowd/guy in basement over in the States who sold me Boulder Dash for my XE also does a run or two of Boulder Dash 2600.... that'd be a nice thing to have.
