Mac Sierra Memory Requirement

I downloaded Mac Sierra onto my MacBook Air (mid 2013 model). I only had ~5GB of space on my HDD before updating from El Captain and the trash was empty and all that. Now running Sierra I have 20GB free HDD space. Yet looking I haven't lost anything and have not enabled the option to store files on iCloud.

Anyone else experience this does Sierra use a lot less HDD memory than El Captain ? Thats the only reason behind it I can see.

I've a 2011 air and got back ~15gb from the install. I'm just assuming it removed old installer files, old system files etc that were not needed anymore.
