I am on JA and have been offered one day a week ( 12 hours ) for the next four weeks and maybe more hours if everything works out. I will be earning 140e for the 12 hours what is the best way to approach SW as I can't afford to sign off. Hopefully someone might be able to advise me thank you.

Just call into your local welfare office and tell them you may have 12 hours of work over 1 day per week for the next 4 weeks. You will probably have 5 days welfare to collect per week during this 4 week period. If you are single and on €188 JA per week, I think you will collect €116 per week in welfare.

Thanks Plugguy for the advice. But what I have been told that is they will cut me off and put me on what they call X and O's. If it was as simple as me losing a days claim I would be in Monday to do that but I am scared about being cut off altogether as I have a small kid as well. I really appreciate your advice. :)

They won't cut you off. Just go in with your new employers details, if you have them. You will have to sign what are called X & Os while working and they will reassess your payments. If you are working one day, it doesn't necessarily mean you lose a full days payment. They are not the ogres they used be and will be glad that you are getting some work. Good Luck with the job.

Thanks Maryanne84. When I asked the guy he told me that if I went on X and O's that I will have no money for two weeks once its being set up. Is X and O's the only way around working the one day that seems to be the only option I was offered. I really appreciate the advice.

Hi I recently went on what are called the x's and o's and it is means tested - I lose 37 per day that I work . Social welfare will look for your pay slip to calculate your means - you are paid a week behind so yes you might be waiting a week or so for your payment . I found them extremely helpful in the SW office and there is also a One parent back to work dividend that you can apply for which is 31 euros a week which is not taken into consideration when calculating your means , so apply for that also . If you get 19 hours a week you might be better off applying for FIS. Best of luck !

Thank you claregal1for you help. I felt ok that I would have to go on X and O's its I hoped they would just reduce my payments using their means test method. I will have to ask the person thats giving me the work will they fill out the forms for me. It seems an awful lot of hassle for an extra 32e net for a 12 hour shift and driving 68k round trip. But I suppose if you want to work thats what you have to do.. Thanks again and up the banner :)
