    Hey everyone!

This is a long shot! I've just recently got involved in setting up a school rugby team and don't know where to begin with getting stuff for training. We don't have a massive funds but have managed jerseys so far but actual field equipment or tackle pads, im just wondering if there is somewhere I could get them second hand or used if a club was upgrading.

We have a lined field already

I put a post on adverts and in a few places but thought someone here might know something or somewhere to get me started.

    Thanks in advance!

My first point of call would be to the Leinster Branch, presuming you are in Leinster. There are community development officers who can call out to you to go through what you will need. They should be able to get you some stuff, such as balls and marker cones and bibs, water bottles, first aid kits and maybe some bags as well. They should also be able to point you in the right direction for basic coach training courses, which nowadays are crucial given the H&S end of things.

It would also be worth your while contacting your local clubs. They may be able to throw you down some basic gear that they don't need but if they can't they may be able to offer support in other areas.

Lastly, it would be also worth contacting the IRFU and talking to the Leisure Rugby office; these are the guys who run tag rugby nationally. Tag is a fantastic way to introduce the game and some of it's skillsets without killing or maiming everybody early on :)

Our lads are all part of local rugby clubs so they know the game already it's just we've nothing to work with. I'm kind of on my own doing it and the local coach is helping out. I've spent my own cash getting cones and markers, it's just that I wouldn't be able to put the money into good bags. Might be no harm in emailing around I suppose.

Im in Munster so assuming that there is a development officer here too.

We've started our senior team but the demand is high so we have interest to start 3 other teams for the younger boys.

Thanks again for all your help!

    I really appreciate it!

The comment was tongue in cheek, but in reality you don't need much equipment. Balls and some cones should be enough. Pads are expensive and handy but not nessecary. Most drills can be done without them. Kids should be playing as much as possible, ball in hand either full contact or semi opposed. Get them used to running with the ball and tackling.

Munster Branch should have a community officer close to you. You'll need to contact them anyway to touch base about getting registered as a club so you are covered for match insurance etc

talk to your local rugby club and see how they can help. Contact your local branch(provincial) development officer as they will will be able to help.
