Sanding and painting spindles

Looking for some advice. We have a wooden pine stair case and skirting in our hall and we've never liked it. All the wood is varnished, so I started sanding down the skirting and door frames and painted with a primer and Satinwood. It looks really good now and am very happy with it. I started sanding the stairs and didn't realise what a mammoth task it is with sanding the spindles (58 spindles in total)!

To save some time, could I just paint a primer over the varnished spindles and then paint in satinwood? I understand that it could chip, but there's no young kids in the house anymore so can't see any major damage being done!

Or, is there any other easy way to sand down spindles?

    Hi,
I use liquid varnish remover, but primer will do the job as well, use BIN primer, works great.

No shortcuts with spindles I am afraid.
    Sand and paint or varnish.
If you have a small detail sander it can help a lot

Get a handful of these, they should make it easier

light sanding with rough paper to give the primer some thing to grip to,apply two coats of your chosen primer, sand between each coat, then apply two coats of your chosen top coat, sand before the last coat.JOB DONE.

sorry to bring up this thread again, but I had another question.

Now that I've painted the door frames with white satinwood, the original doors look dirty (and even yellow) compared to the nice shiny frames.

Can I just paint over the current satinwood doors with a fresh coat or 2 of Satinwood paint? or do I need to sand these down or put an undercoat on them? When I do a google search all I can find is painting satinwood over gloss!
