Do Christmas parties in January ever work?

I was in a restaurant last night and what was obviously a postponed office Christmas party was going on at the next table. It all looked a bit lack lustre and, by the time we were leaving, several of that table were gone.

I remember a few years ago my workplace, for various reasons, decided to have the Christmas party in January instead of December. About half the staff turned up, the atmosphere was a bit dead and when it was suggested again the following year everyone said 'no'.

I'm just wondering if postponing Christmas meet ups and parties to January is ever a good idea, or do you need the Christmas vibe and buzz to make it really enjoyable?

    Last night was February.
    It's much worse than January...

They shouldn't call in a Christmas party.

We had a kick off party for the new year last week, was more fun than the Christmas party.

We had ours in January two years in a row. The first year people were delighted about it - lots of comments on how much better it was to have it when people weren't as busy in both work and at home. Also was nice to have a night out to break January and it was good bit to have the added expense of a Christmas party in December when it's such an expensive month anyway

So we did the exact same the next year. Sane restaurant and everything and everyone gave it stink that having a Christmas party in January was stupid, no one was in the mood for it and everyone was broke after Christmas and this extra expense was unwelcomed.

We've had ours for the past 2 years in January, been a huge success each time. They were previously held in December and there was a poor turnout, everyone moaning that December is too busy, no money etc.

It's now held in a hotel mid Jan with food, drink and overnight expenses paid so I guess that helps - if it was just a meal in a restaurant I'm not sure it would be as popular - people like to get as much for free as possible!
