is it legal for a car insurance company to cancel policy mid term?
I got a call from my current insurer "bump" saying they where going to cancel my policy as its a Japanese import and they shouldn't have taken it on in the first place.it was disclosed from the beginning that it was a Japanese import.

surely they would have to honour the contract...?
should I be entitled to a full refund as the policy is two months old?
    what are my options?

I sat down a few years back and read the full policy from my car insurer that I was with.
There was a clause in it that said they could cancel when they wanted. I don't know if that's a standard thing in policies or because I was driving a classic car.

Depends on the contract I suspect, but many insurance policies allow the consumer to cancel at any time as well. So, it works both ways. I'd say it is unusual for the insurer to cancel unless they have learned something that wasn't disclosed up front. You're not likely to get a refund for months already covered I imagine as well

Well if they shouldnt have taken it on in the first place then thats their own fault really.

If it was fully disclosed upfront, then its their own fault. I would be very reluctant to let them cancel the policy because having to declare that you have had an insurance policy cancelled (even if it was not your fault) will make getting insurance in the future extremely difficult.

An Insurer can cancel a policy by giving X days (check policy) notice by registered letter to the policyholders last known address. The letter does not need to be received and no reason has to be given. Having a forced cancellation is, as you say, not something you want on your record. Try and resolve the issue or ask if you can cancel the policy voluntarily and place your cover elsewhere
