Have this on my old run around mountain bike. I presume the wheel needs replacing or could it be a simpler fix?

Get it checked. I've had a wheel axle that was on its last legs suddenly split and it's not a nice experience. Even less nice if you're coming down a mountain fast.

I had ball bearing races disintegrate in a headset that gave a lot of weird noises and steering effects. If there is something up with the bearings in the hub of the front wheel it's worth examining closely. And soon!

Also, nice to see a weird noise that is not thought to be coming from the bottom bracket!

are your valve stems a little bit smaller than the hole in the wheel, causing them to rattle off the rim a bit? Drove me mad when my valves did that. Can also happen if the pads are a bit loose in the calliper.

Get someone to bounce the front up and down, while you hold onto bits around that area, and see does the rattle stop when you grab it by a component
