Query - Don't think I've been taxed on second job!

    Hi there,

I'm a teacher working in the public sector on a temporary, year-long contract. I have recently taken on an extra job teaching night classes, and am paid monthly for this, and it's also a public sector job. I've been paid once so far and I haven't been taxed properly. I haven't gotten to view my payslip because I need to go into the offices of the company I work for in order to set up my staff email to view my online payslip, which is not an easy feat given that I work in a different town during office hours. However, despite not having seen my payslip, I know for sure there has been a mistake. My take home pay was about 8% less than what was on my pay claims form, whereas I expected to only take home about half as I worked a summer job for a private company this year and was taxed at a rate of 42%.

Also, I just checked my PAYE Anytime and my new job isn't on my profile. I tried to register it before over the phone, but they needed the Employer Number. My employer said that it would be on my payslip (seriously), so I couldn't call them before my first paycheck arrived. Maybe I am just not on the system at all and have slipped through the cracks? I once forgot to ring revenue about a new job before and was just emergency taxed loads, so I'm confused! Could it be that my employer hasn't registered me either?

Anyway, can anyone shed any light on any of this before I call Revenue?

I hope the post isn't too annoying to read - it's a bit long winded, sorry!! I'm not great when it comes to tax but I know something's up and I'd love to have some sort of idea before I contact Revenue about it. It'd be lovely to just continue getting these great paychecks but I'm sure it'd come back to bite me eventually!

    Thanks for reading!! :)

i would think you are on emergency tax for the new job. As its the first month you are given single person band and credit. Assuming it a small figure its is possible it below the paye and prsi limits so no tax was charged.

You say the pay is 8% lower then your claim. This would be the USC charge on the pay. You will notice in month 2 the tax has increased again as you lose the single person tax credit. Come month 3 if its still not sorted you will be taxed at the highest rates so 40% PAYE 8% USC and if above the limits 4% prsi
